Lauren + Eddie

by | Aug 2017 | Story

I adopted my horse from New Vocations in 2014. I had recently retired my mare, who we bought for less than $3k when I was 10 years old, from the upper levels of Eventing. I was on the look out for my next partner. I wanted a horse with potential, athleticism, and a great mind. This is exactly what we found in my adopted horse from New Vocations. My Mom saw Eddie’s ad posted on the NV Facebook page, and immediately fell in love with his pictures, video, and breeding. She knew he was something special, and couldn’t wait to send me his information. He was by Malibu Moon, the same sire that produced a colt by the name of Major Malibu, that my grandma owned syndication in. Major Malibu became an extremely successful racehorse and steeplechase horse with a lasting career to 12 years of age.

We couldn’t wait to adopt Eddie, Major Malibu’s stunning liver chestnut brother. Eddie had a line of potential adopters, but as fate would have it, my Mom’s application was approved just in time for him to arrive before my college graduation! Eddie has been a dream come true ever since the day he arrived. I have enjoyed every step of his journey to becoming an event horse. He is as smart as he is beautiful, and as brave as he is talented. That is the great thing about adopting Thoroughbreds off the track; they have such diverse talent, and often, exceptional breeding. They really can excel in any sport, and with the right training and program, can reach the top levels of sport.

We adopted Eddie under the Jockey Club name “Excess Liquidity,” but have since changed his show name to “Crossfire.” I have produced him myself from the start. We have a real partnership and have enjoyed just over two seasons competing in Eventing with a stellar record. He is truly the most talented and brave horse I have had the opportunity to ride. He just made the move up to Preliminary level this year – and did it in style! I hope to continue producing him into a top sport horse so he can be an ambassador to encourage others in my sport to adopt. You can follow his journey on social media with the hashtag #teamCROSSFIRE.

This is what “right horse” means to me.
The right horse is the one I can learn and grow with. The right horse is a horse I can develop an instinctual partnership with, as my sport is built on a foundation of trust and bravery.
